GREENSBORO, NC – Wake Forest senior forward Smart Shayla was named the CCA’s offensive women’s football player of the week, while senior Virginia defenseman Claire Constant was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
Smart recorded the first hat trick of his college campaign and the first for Wake Forest since 2016 to take the Demon Deacons to a pair of wins last week. She scored all three goals in last Thursday’s 3-0 win over Loyola (Md.). The elder started the scoring in the 10th minute against the Greyhounds and added a second goal a minute later. Smart completed the hat trick in the 57th minute with every goal scored during the course of the game.
A native of Apopka, Fla., Smart collected an assist in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Appalachian State to end the week with seven points. Smart now has six goals this season tied for the top of the conference and ranks among the best in the country.
Constant helped anchor a UVa backline that recorded a pair of shutouts including a 1-0 win over No.9 Santa Clara on Thursday and a 2-0 win over James Madison on Sunday. The senior played the full 90 minutes in both games and disrupted several scoring opportunities for the Broncos during the Cavaliers shutout against the defending NCAA champions.
On Sunday, the Alexandria, Va. Native helped limit JMU to just two shots (none on goal) and a single corner kick. With shutouts, the Cavaliers have now recorded five shutouts in six games this season, including two against nationally ranked opponents.
The ACC women’s football action returns Thursday with 13 of the league’s teams in action, highlighted by an ACC Network doubles schedule featuring Clemson, 15th, hosting South Carolina, 12th, at 6pm, followed from # 3 Virginia home to # 7 Penn State.
