EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The University of Tennessee football team at Martin faced an early deficit with a goal just 90 seconds into the game before SIUE rocketed to a 4-1 LA Conference victory. Ohio Valley Thursday night at Korte Stadium.
The Skyhawks fell to 3-8-4 overall while moving to 1-4-2 in the league with the backhand. Despite the loss, UT Martin clinched their ticket to next week’s eight-team OVC Football Championship, regardless of the final league results on Sunday. Meanwhile, SIUE improved to 5-5-4 with the win and 4-1-2 in OVC action to clinch a top-four seed in next week’s OVC Football Championship.
SIUE looked aggressive in the competition with their first goal scored less than 90 seconds into the game before putting all four goals on the scoreboard in the first half. Facing a three-goal deficit after 14 minutes, UT Martin scored their only goal of the competition in the 20the minute to put the visitors on the board.
After goals scored by the host team of Taylor Dolt (2′), Sidney Christopher (9′) and Matea Diekema (14′), it was time for the Skyhawks to enter the chessboard. The Cougars attempted to reverse the pitch but Sophie Mankowski turned on the jets to beat the defender and created a 1-on-1 opportunity which she cashed in from 12 yards to get past the diving keeper for her second score of the season. Then the hosts added a final goal in the 30e minute to conclude the scoring performance of the match.
When the final counts were counted, the Cougars outscored the Skyhawks 14-8 on the night. Dolt led SIUE with three shot attempts while finishing his night with a goal and an assist. Meanwhile, Izzy Patterson and Megane Drake paced the Skyhawks with two shots apiece.
UT Martin will look to solidify their top seed position when the regular season closes on Sunday, October 23 against Southeast Missouri. The action is set to begin at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
