A soccer star from Long Island has joined the United States men’s national team as they seek to compete in the World Cup.
Joe Scally, from Lake Grove, is currently playing for a team in Germany.
Proud mother Margaret Scally has lots of photos of her son and other family members on the living room wall. But they mean a bit more now to everyone that the 19-year-old was chosen to play for the United States men’s national soccer team at the World Cup.
” Mad ! I think we were all like crazy. It doesn’t seem real. That’s crazy ! Margaret Scally enthuses.
From an early age, Joe Scally knew he wanted to play football and nothing else.
At 15, he signed his first professional contract with the New York City Football Club. Three years later, he will play for Borussia Mönchengladbach in Germany.
Now, the star defender will play for the USA national soccer team in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He arrived there over the weekend and sent a video message to his family and to Long Island.
“Just wanted to say hi to everyone back home on Long Island for cheering on not just me but the entire U.S. Men’s National Team as they fight for everything. It’s definitely been an unforgettable experience and I’m glad you’re all here to come around,” Joe Scally said.
Now his family is packing up to join him. They say it was unimaginable for him to go to the World Cup.
“I used to watch him grow up and now that he’s been called up, it just doesn’t seem real,” says his brother, Drew Scally.
The family admits, however, that they won’t bring pizza or bagels from Long Island because they say that’s not their thing.
“We wish he would eat this. He’ll eat it like once. He doesn’t eat garbage,” laughs Margaret Scally. “He doesn’t eat junk food.”
The FIFA World Cup starts a week from Monday.
