Guy reveals dozens of details from Elon Musk’s Tesla conference call


There are a lot of people who spend a large portion of their days on Twitter looking for new information about Tesla. Some of these people are also very engaged / active and have made contact with Tesla staff members who regularly disclose information to them from inside the company. One of those very active people on Tesla’s Twitter, Sawyer Merritt, shared a few hours ago that Tesla (or “Technoking”) CEO Elon Musk was about to hold a conference call on the bridge. Sawyer apparently got to watch or listen to it as it unfolded and decided to “live tweeted” which was said after the details of the call were passed to him. (I’ll come back to the meta-issues regarding this process and corporate leaks at the end of the article.)

The tweet thread has at least a dozen tweets. Below are key summaries of the potential news, with the tweets themselves embedded at the bottom of the article.

The Tesla Cybertruck would be delayed until the end of 2022. (And that means volume production in 2023, assuming it’s no longer delayed.) It’s not that surprising, especially since Elon made a comment on AI Day that seemed to indicate the same thing. He mentioned that “Hardware 4” for Tesla Full Self-Driving would likely launch in about a year with the Cybertruck. This meant for many of us a rough schedule for Cybertruck deliveries starting in the second half of 2022. Since the truck is unique in many ways and could face all kinds of growing difficulties on the way to production. in volume, and given that the design is said to have not been completed yet and production does not appear to be imminent at all, a production start in late 2022 isn’t as much of a surprise, but it’s good to see it confirmed (sort of ). Of course, a lot of people think the Cybertruck has some serious production issues that will delay it well beyond 2022, or never be produced at all. Not being an expert on these matters, I don’t have a deep opinion on this, but I do think the serial production of the Cybertruck would be among Tesla’s greatest achievements.

“FSD 10 is pretty deep, a revelation, it’s the future; V10 next week and “button request” 2 weeks later, “ Elon would have said. In case you haven’t followed, this refers to Tesla Full Self-Driving and the big update that many of us have been waiting for about 2 years. It should provide us with door-to-door autopilot functionality. We’re still a long way from having Tesla robots that a driver doesn’t have to watch out for, but the hope is that Elon is right and that a large version of FSD Beta will be released in a few weeks.

The open Tesla Supercharger stations could be launched beyond a test phase in Europe next month, apparently starting in the Netherlands. This is again not so surprising given recent updates from Elon on this plan and the fact that Tesla had an open station tested in the Netherlands a year ago (which Maarten Vinkhuyzen visited for CleanTechnica, even loading there with his Renault ZOE). How fast will this unfold in Europe and beyond is the big question. We will see!

“Elon expects growth of at least a factor of 10.” I think the tweeter means that Elon expects Tesla to increase in size at least 10 times, not that Elon expects to get super fat.

“Elon may be going to Mars in about 10 years.” Hmm, while this might scare some people, keep in mind that this is “Elon’s time” and about 2 weeks can mean around 1 year. In this case, 10 years could easily be 20 years. However, I think SpaceX is getting more and more Elon’s attention, and the timelines there in SpaceX Land can be a bit more precise.

Robovan! There is apparently a robovan planned in the long term, with a particular emphasis on helping people with disabilities.

Semi-affordable $ 25,000 Tesla won’t be called Model 2. I’m surprised this happened on the call (assuming it really did), but even so the “Model 2” was still extremely unlikely (didn’t follow the previous logic of vehicle names Tesla – “Model S” for sedan, “Model X” for crossover, “Model E” transformed into “Model 3” because Ford did not give up a brand). It was just a placeholder for us and others to use when writing about this vehicle. Having said that, I’m a little devastated because I really wanted this Tesla line of vehicles:

  • Model 2
  • Models
  • Model 3
  • Model X
  • Model Y
  • Model 4
  • My shirt

In simpler terms: 2 S-3-XY 4 My shirt.

The “Model C” would better match the logic of previous Tesla nomenclature (“C” for “compact” or “cheap”). However, the word is that Elon once said that it would not be “Model [fill in the blank]. “

“Elon said Tesla is considering not having a steering wheel and pedals for the Model 2 and just roll the dice on FSD.” Granted, I find this one a bit confusing. While the goal is to produce a simpler, smaller, and less expensive vehicle for a part of the market that cannot afford another Tesla, it doesn’t appear to be a fully autonomous vehicle. The cost of FSD is currently $ 10,000 and the price is steadily increasing. Will half the cost of the car soon be FSD? On the other hand, if you want to get a useful robotaxis on the street once FSD is ready, don’t you want to use larger and more convenient cars or vans? I don’t know how well this concept has been thought out, or if the tweet phrased it well. We’ll see (maybe).

Giga Berlin approval in October. Apparently, Tesla Giga Berlin’s approval is expected in October, potentially leaving enough room to start producing mainstream vehicles there at the end of the year. (This isn’t really news, as Tesla and Elon recently posted essentially the same thing.)

“Tesla will spell Tesla on the roof of the GF Austin for planes landing at the nearby airport.” Hmm.

Many have pointed out that releasing Tesla’s internal ratings, goals and updates not for public consumption is irresponsible and could even result in the dismissal of Tesla staff. Many Tesla fans are concerned that sharing leaks like these could harm the business. I don’t have a clear opinion on it in general, because I think it depends on the situation / leak. However, anyone within the company who discloses details like these should keep in mind that such activity can easily get them fired, especially when this sort of thing becomes routine.
