Dutch women’s football team Freys the Pioneers

PELLA — An assist and a goal from midfield Abby Frey (junior, Mesa, Arizona, Desert Ridge HS) powered the Central College women’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Platteville on Saturday afternoon.

Central (6-2-1) continued their streak through September by winning their fifth straight game with the decision over the Pioneers (6-2-1). The Dutch tied the school record with their fifth consecutive shutout with Sheila Horstman (senior, West Des Moines, Valley HS) in order to.

“Our defense really limited them today,” coach Mike Kobylinski said. “We’ve accomplished great things with one of the toughest non-conference schedules in program history. Going 6-2-1 against some of the best teams in Minnesota and Michigan is something we can be proud of. “

Amber Santana (sophomore, midfielder, Indio, CA, Shadow Hills HS) celebrated his birthday by scoring his fourth goal of the season in the 20th minute. Frey assisted the striking strike via a corner.

“I couldn’t be happier for Amber,” Kobylinski said.

Frey added his own goal in the 84th minute on a loose ball after Rachel Daniels (senior, Geneseo, IL) made a run down the right side and put the ball in the box.

“Frey was a huge presence today,” Kobylinski said. “She was once again a host and had some other nice strikes on the frame.”

The attacking pressure of the Dutch throughout the game allowed the team to set a school record with 19 corner kicks.

The Dutch begin American Rivers Conference action next Saturday at the University of Dubuque for a game at 3:30 p.m.
